About the Agora
The AGORA is the general assembly of AEGEE. It is the most important event concerning the functioning of the association itself. In addition, it is a platform for young Europeans to discuss the future of Europe. In the AGORA, each antenna from all over Europe is represented by their elected delegates. Every year 2 AGORA organised, which are Spring and Fall AGORA.
During an AGORA 600 to 1000 students meet for 4 days in order to take decision and set up guidelines for the successive 6 months. More precisely, the AGORA has the following tasks:
- The AGORA decides upon the approval of the activity report as presented by the President of AEGEE-Europe and approval of the financial report of AEGEE-Europe as presented by the Financial Director.
- The AGORA votes upon the future development of the association and sets the general guidelines of AEGEE-Europe's policies, projects and programmes as proposed by the CD, AEGEE locals or Working Groups (e.g. yearplan and strategic plan).
- The AGORA decides about modification of the. Statutes of AEGEE-Europe, with a 2/3 majority
- of the delegates.
- The AGORA elects the members of the Comité Directeur , the commissions of AEGEE-Europe and Project Teams.
AGORA comes from the Greek word “αγορά” and stands for “Marketplace”. Since in ancient Greek cities, an AGORA, the marketplace, was an open space serving as an assembly area and backdrop for commercial, civic, social, and religious activities and debates. In the style of this tradition, also the general assembly of AEGEE every year provokes discussions about Europe, the role of young Europeans and our visions for the continent.
Many AGORAe have taken place in AEGEE’s history since the 1st one in Munich way back in April 1986. The last fall AGORA was in Eskisehir(TR), the Spring AGORA took place in Ljubljana(SL).
As the AGORA in Valletta decided in 2007, the elections for the CD (General Directorate of AEGEE Europe in Brussels) are now only part of the Spring AGORA.
Thus, the Fall AGORA will offer more space for content discussions that will outreach the borders of technical AEGEE discussions. We will use this space in order to organize an additional content program for the participants of the AGORA in cooperation with the Chair under the title “Visions for Europe”.
We hope that this will bring our organization “back to the roots” – that means back to EGEE and towards more discussions about our visions, ideas and initiatives for Europe.
